“I just wanted to make my mom proud.” With those heartfelt words, BLACKPINK’s Jennie revealed a deeply personal side of herself during her recent appearance on tvN’s You Quiz on the Block, aired on May 7.
Known for her bold stage presence and fashion-forward image, Jennie surprised fans by opening up about her childhood, her mother, and the emotional moment that moved her to tears at the Coachella stage.
🌏 Studying Abroad at 10, Alone but Strong
Jennie shared that she was just 10 years old when she moved to New Zealand to study abroad. “After I became an adult, my mom told me she just wanted me to grow up in a bigger world,” Jennie recalled. Though her mom stayed with her for the first two months, she remembered telling her, “Don’t call me, I need to go play,” making everyone laugh.
Jennie found the environment surprisingly suitable. “I could play for two hours after studying for one. We did a lot of cooking, art, and nature experiences. For someone like me who loved rolling in the grass, it was perfect,” she said. She also revealed she learned English in just six months — purely for survival.
🎤 “Mom, I Love You” — Behind the Coachella Moment
In one of the most viral Coachella 2024 moments, Jennie shouted “Mom, I love you!” during her solo performance of ‘Starlight’. She broke into tears on stage — a rare sight for the confident star.
“I told myself I wouldn’t cry. But it was the last song, and I knew my mom was watching. It all came out — ‘Kkuang!’” she said with a smile. “I still can’t watch that video. I cried so hard.”
Her mother, seated in the crowd, cried too. “I thought she’d be thrilled, but she was sobbing in her friend’s arms saying, ‘You did well, you worked so hard,’ then just took some photos and left for the next schedule,” Jennie laughed.
👩👧 “Just a Normal Mom and Daughter”
The lyrics “I just want to make my mom proud” in ‘Starlight’ weren’t just for show. Jennie explained, “My job is glamorous and filled with public perception. When things get tough, I ask myself why I’m doing this. And I always go back to: ‘To live happily with Mom. To be her proud daughter.’”
When asked what kind of person her mom is, Jennie said, “She told me not to talk about her today,” smiling. “After I shouted ‘I love you, Mom’ at Coachella, it went everywhere. But really, we’re just an ordinary mother and daughter.”
🌍 BLACKPINK’s Full-Group Comeback in July
Jennie’s heartfelt appearance comes ahead of BLACKPINK’s full-group comeback this summer. The ‘BLACKPINK 2025 WORLD TOUR’ kicks off on July 5–6 at Goyang Main Stadium in Korea and will continue across 10 major cities including Los Angeles, Chicago, Toronto, New York, Paris, Milan, Barcelona, London, and Tokyo.
